Didysis Kūlis
The Great Kūlis of the Skuodas Region
Šilalės Kūlis is in Šilalė village, Skuodas District, beside the Šakalė stream. The word kūlis means 'stone' in Samogitian, so the name is very local and precise: this is a large boulder dominating the landscape.
Saugoma.lt states that the stone is a state-protected natural and cultural heritage object. It is important not only as a geological fact but also as a local landmark embedded in Samogitia's stone-landscape tradition.
Dimensions and Geology
According to Saugoma.lt, Šilalės Kūlis is a rapakivi granite boulder. It is 3.66 m high, 7.48 m long, 5.48 m wide, and 18.33 m in circumference. These measurements place it among Lithuania's largest stones.
Boulders like this reached Lithuania during the ice ages, when glaciers carried crystalline rocks from the north. For visitors, the point is not only to photograph the stone but also to look at its surface: reddish-grey crystals and massive scale clearly differ from local sediments.
Stone and Cultural Setting
The setting of Šilalės Kūlis is associated with traces of old beliefs and stone culture. Such links need careful wording: some are based on local tradition and interpretation rather than only documented history.
Still, in Samogitia large stones often function as markers of stories, boundaries, sacred places, or community memory. Because of its size, Šilalės Kūlis naturally became such a place.
Footpath in Šilalė Village
Saugoma.lt also presents a footpath in Šilalė village, so the stone can be visited not merely as a roadside stop but as a short landscape route. The path helps visitors sense the relationship between stream, greenery, and stones.
After rain, access may be wet, so comfortable footwear is useful. Do not carve the stone, climb on it, or leave objects there; it is a protected natural monument.
Planning the Stop
Šilalės Kūlis has no conventional opening hours or ticket. It is an outdoor object that can be visited independently, but visitors should respect protected-area rules and private land boundaries.
It is best combined with Barstyčiai Stone, Mosėdis Stone Museum, Apuolė Hillfort, and other Skuodas-region sites. In that context the boulder becomes part of a wider Samogitian stone route rather than a single curiosity.
