Jaurykla Park - Kretinga's city nature park by the Jaurykla stream
Jaurykla Park lies in Kretinga around P. Vileišio Street, following the Jaurykla stream in the southern part of the city. It is an approximately 10 ha nature park, opened to visitors in 2021 and regarded as Kretinga's newest green space.
Although it is inside the city, this is not a formal square or a decorative pocket park. Its character comes from the stream, greenery, bridges, boardwalks, viewing platforms, and a slightly more natural relief in places. That makes it useful both for a short family walk and for a slower loop with pauses.
Paths, bridges, and five viewing platforms
The park has more than 3 km of pedestrian paths, wooden bridges, stairs, boardwalks, information stands, and five landscape viewing platforms. The infrastructure lets visitors choose a shorter or longer route instead of simply walking one straight line from one entrance to another.
The Jaurykla stream is not a major water body, but it is the park's organizing line. As you follow it, the city briefly recedes: the sound of water appears, the vegetation changes, and small platforms create natural places to stop, with views over the stream valley.
Accessible for all: families, children, and people with reduced mobility
The park has several children's playgrounds with sand areas, climbing equipment, and swings, as well as an amphitheatre for events, wellness and educational trails, information stands, and biotoilets. The wellness and nature-education routes are also adapted for people with reduced mobility.
For children, the park works well because the route has many small goals: a bridge, a play area, an information stand, a viewing platform, or a boardwalk section. You do not need to plan a demanding hike, but it is easy to spend more than an hour here without rushing.
How the park came to be: the 'Nature Tourism for All' project
Jaurykla Park was built on the initiative of Kretinga District Municipality under the Latvia-Lithuania cooperation project 'Nature Tourism Adaptation for All'. This project explains why the park pays so much attention to accessibility - level paths, viewing platforms, and comfortable infrastructure.
The same project contributed to similar nature sites elsewhere in Lithuania. In Kretinga its result is a tidy but natural space on the edge of the city, combining rest, movement, and landscape discovery.
Visiting all year round
According to Kretinga District Municipality, Jaurykla Park is always accessible and free to visit. As with any outdoor space, the real comfort of a visit depends on weather, season, and path conditions.
Spring to autumn is the easiest period, when the greenery is active and the paths are usually drier. In winter the park can be quieter, but boardwalks and small bridges may be slippery, so shoes with good grip matter.
How to fit Jaurykla Park into a Kretinga day
Jaurykla Park combines well with Kretinga Manor and Winter Garden, the Franciscan Monastery, or the town centre. That pairing lets you see both historic Kretinga and the city's newer green infrastructure in one day.
Next to Jaurykla Park, by the Akmena River, a mountain-bike park is being built, and for a wider route Jaurykla can be an easy beginning or ending before continuing to the Japanese Garden, Kartena Hillfort, or places in Salantai Regional Park.
