ETM, Energy and Technology Museum, Vilnius City Power Plant
A museum in a former power plant
The Energy and Technology Museum operates on Rinktinės Street, in the former Vilnius city power plant building by the Neris. That matters: the exhibitions have not been moved into a neutral pavilion; they are shown where the city's energy infrastructure actually worked.
ETM's history emphasizes that the Vilnius city power plant began operating on February 14, 1903. This date marks a stage in modernizing Vilnius, when electricity, lighting, industry, and new technical professions changed everyday urban life.
Turbine hall and industrial heritage
The strongest impression comes from the industrial space itself: massive halls, technical equipment, control panels, pipes, metal, and brick. Here it becomes easier to understand that energy is not an abstract idea; it has buildings, sounds, smells, and human labour behind it.
The former power-plant building is itself an exhibit. The surviving Elektra sculpture on the building recalls the early representation of city electrification and shows how technological progress was understood as a symbol of modernity.
From power plant to ETM
The power plant operated until the end of the twentieth century. In 2003 the museum stage began here, at first focused on energy heritage. In 2008 the institution received its present name, the Energy and Technology Museum, and a broader subject.
Today ETM tells more than the story of electricity production. Its exhibitions cover city infrastructure, the development of technology, transport, engineering, interactive experiments, and educational programmes, making the place suitable for adults and children alike.
Interactivity and educational activities
The museum is at its strongest when visitors do not stop at display cases, but try working models, tasks, and demonstrations. This format connects technology history with physics, everyday devices, and city services.
If you are visiting with children, check the schedule for educational activities, guided tours, and extra experiences in advance. Some activities may have a separate price or limited participant numbers.
Opening hours and tickets
At the time of research, ETM visitor information stated that the museum was open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:30 and closed on Monday. The adult ticket then cost 7 EUR, the reduced ticket 3.50 EUR, and additional experiences could cost extra.
Opening hours, prices, and exhibition updates can change, so check the official ETM visitor information page before travelling.
