Adomynė Manor: a rare wooden manor

Adomynė Manor stands in Adomynė village, Kupiškis District. It is a rare surviving wooden manor of vernacular Classicism in Lithuania; very few wooden manor houses of this age and type remain. The main building, the manor house, has a two-wing corner plan, board cladding, and Classicist features.

Its value lies not only in the architecture but also in the well-preserved authentic interior. For that reason Adomynė is considered one of the country's most valuable wooden manors.

From Aluotėliai to Adomynė

The place and manor changed names. It was earlier called Aluotėliai, later Jonava after owner Jonas Žuravskis, and in 1921 finally became Adomynė. The manor was owned by the Pliateriai, then the Žuravskiai, and from the late nineteenth century by the Vilėniškiai.

Architectural research indicates that the present wooden manor house was probably remodelled in the 1820s from an earlier folwark building, giving it Classicist proportions and a decorated interior. The safest construction date is therefore approximate: the early nineteenth century.

Authentic interior

Adomynė is known especially for what survives inside: several Dutch-type tile stoves with large white-and-green tiles and fireplaces, ornamented parquet, typical nineteenth-century panel doors with metal fittings, and ceiling painting with central rosettes. Such a coherent wooden-manor interior is very rare in Lithuania.

In 2024 Adomynė Manor was added to the list of cultural-heritage objects of exceptional value marked with the Hague Convention Blue Shield sign. This indicates special protection in case of armed conflict and underlines the site's importance.

A living village centre

Adomynė Manor is not an empty museum building. It houses a branch of the Kupiškis District library, a cultural and leisure space, and a community-created display of old household objects and local finds; events are held in the yard.

In 2019 Adomynė was named a Lithuanian Small Capital of Culture. The local culinary heritage product, Adomynė funeral buns, baked in the area since the nineteenth century, also strengthens the place's identity.

How to visit Adomynė Manor

The manor fits well with other Kupiškis-region sights such as Palėvenė Manor, the monastery, and Kupiškis Lagoon. The manor itself usually takes about an hour; an educational session, for example on the local buns, takes longer.

Because library and cultural branches as well as a community exhibition operate in the building, visiting often follows their working hours or requires prior arrangement. Public hours and ticket prices may not be posted, so check Kupiškis Culture Centre or tourist-centre information before travelling.
