Lithuanian Riddling Questions: Answers and Meanings

On a map.

The question swaps real water for its representation. A lake drawn on paper does not wet your finger.

Because they have no eyes at the back.

Instead of explaining fear, the answer points to a simple bodily fact: to see behind you, you must turn.

When food is given to a hungry person.

The expected answer is a clock time. The reply makes hunger and the arrival of food more important than a timetable.

It knows it by heart.

The rooster becomes a pupil or singer who need not look at the words. This is comic personification, not an account of bird behaviour.

If it raised the other, it would fall.

The question invites a complicated cause; the answer substitutes a joke about support. It does not explain why birds really rest this way.

Wet ones.

A guesser may name kinds of rock, but the answer chooses a condition. Location matters, not geological composition.

A question does not guarantee that such an ordinary bird exists. Solving it means rejecting the premise rather than inventing a species.

When they can take two.

The dog is given the human habit of arranging a bed with a pillow. The answer is a joke, not a zoological explanation.

When it “swims” (Lithuanian: plaukia).

Lithuanian plaukti can mean travelling on water or crops coming into ear. The meaning translation keeps the Lithuanian verb because the pun does not transfer directly.

Peas do not walk.

The Lithuanian verb can mean fit inside or walk in. The answer insists on walking, so the size of the glass is irrelevant.

When it freezes.

The question assumes liquid water. The answer changes its state: a piece of ice can remain if it is larger than the holes.

Because the forest does not fly to it.

The reply swaps a moving bird and its stationary destination. It is an absurd reversal of cause, not a belief that forests can fly.

Many turns are visible, but they can all belong to one continuous thread. The recorded Lithuanian špūlė means a spool.

When he does not tie a knot.

For nothing can suggest unpaid work or wasted effort. Without a securing knot, the thread pulls through; the old Lithuanian kriaučius means tailor.

Green—that is, uncooked.

Lithuanian žalias means both green and raw or uncooked. The answer does not describe the feathers; it switches to the food-related meaning.

Finished is the decisive word. The answer counts how many additional stitches are needed, not how many were used before.

Lithuanian zuikis can mean a hare or a fare dodger. The bus reveals the second meaning and a modern setting; the genre alone does not make the record ancient.

The question calls the finished product the raw material. Flour is already ground, so the premise must be corrected first.

To the middle of the forest.

The answer imagines a straight crossing: beyond the midpoint the dog heads towards the opposite edge. The question gives no real forest dimensions.

Head upwards can sound like an unusual posture, though it describes ordinary upright walking. Mentioning sailors distracts the listener.

When the door is open.

The listener may expect a motive, but the reply chooses a condition of entry. The joke pictures an ordinary closed doorway.

When looking out of the window.

The person is unharmed: the head is outside the window while the body remains indoors. The trick is what counts as being inside the room.

On the second of January.

The count concerns calendar days reached since the year began, not the full length of the year. January 2 is its second day.

After the first egg, the stomach is no longer empty. The answer counts eggs eaten in the initial state, not a person's appetite.

The direction changes but the stretch between the cities stays the same. The reply avoids an impossible exact tree count.
