Mythological Nature Trail

A short route with a strong theme

Saugoma.lt presents Sirvėta Mythological Trail as a 1.3 km circular nature route through the forests of Šventa. The trail starts at the Sirvėta Regional Park visitor centre, located in the granary of the old Šventa manor site.

It is one of Lithuania's best places to experience mythology physically, not only by reading. The route is short and family-friendly, but its content is not superficial: 17 sculptures and information panels introduce the world of old Lithuanian gods and mythological beings.

17 mythological sculptures

Saugoma.lt states that 17 mythological-deity sculptures have found a home on the trail. Among those represented are Perkūnas, Gabija, Žemyna, Medeina or Žvėrūna, Laima, and other Baltic deities and beings. The stone symbols were created by well-known Lithuanian artists, and panels explain what deity or force visitors see.

The setting matters: the sculptures stand in forest, near the manor site and water. Stone, wood, path, and wetland landscape return mythology to the environment from which such stories arose.

Šventa manor site and visitor centre

The trail begins at the Sirvėta Regional Park visitor centre, which has an exhibition on the mythology theme. It is a useful start because visitors can get context before entering the forest. The site is reached from the Švenčionys-Ignalina road, turning toward Šventa village about 6 km from Švenčionys.

The route winds through the old Šventa manor-site area. At the end are the manor pond, a rest place, benches, and outdoor musical instruments, so the walk has a clear start, transition, and rest point.

Sirvėta Regional Park context

VLE states that Sirvėta Regional Park was established in 1992 and covers 8754.66 ha in Švenčionys and Ignalina districts. It protects the moraine watershed landscape of the Daugava and Žeimena rivers; the highest point is Nevaišiai Hill at 289.69 m, the highest point of the Švenčionys Upland.

The mythological trail reflects the park's nature well. VLE lists Aučynai, Rakšteliai, Kačėniškė, and Stūgliai hillforts, Rakšteliai and Garniai sacred places, Šventa and Juodeliškė barrow cemeteries, manor sites, and the ethnocultural village of Didžiasalis among the park values. The park also has Didžiasalis (12 m) and Senadvaris (26 m) observation towers.

Visiting practice

Saugoma.lt writes that cars can be left by the Sirvėta Regional Park visitor centre, and the route uses reinforced-surface forest paths, wooden steps, and bridges. Small bird symbols on the panels help visitors follow direction.

During research, no separate trail ticket or gate hours were stated. Saugoma.lt has a state-park visitor ticket, but it should be understood as support for protected areas, not as a trail ticket office. The visitor centre may have seasonal hours, so check current information before an education session or exhibition visit.
