Who is Dievas in Lithuanian mythology?
In old Lithuanian religion the highest deity was a sky god. Researchers often identify him with Andajas in written sources, while in folklore he appears simply as Dievas, Dievas senelis, or Praamžius. He is distant, but he stands at the top of the whole religious structure.
Two layers need to be kept apart. The older Sky God is the supreme power to whom other gods are subordinate; the folklore figure Dievas senelis is humanized, walks the earth, and tests people. After Christianity became dominant, this image merged with the Christian God.
The Sky God and the pantheon
In the old Lithuanian pantheon the supreme sky god stood above other deities, even though Perkūnas, the thunder god, was more active in daily life and more visibly worshipped. Other gods protected separate domains: Laukpatis cultivated fields, Vaižgantas flax and hemp, and Žemyna the harvest.
This structure suggests that Lithuanian religion was not strictly monotheistic, but it did have a clear summit. The Sky God stood above all, while individual gods and spirits governed particular areas of life.
Dievas senelis in folklore
In folklore Dievas is often imagined as an old man walking the earth in the form of a beggar or traveler. He tests people's virtue: he rewards the hospitable and merciful, and punishes the greedy and hard-hearted. In this form Dievas becomes the guardian of moral order.
This image matters because it brings the sky god close to everyday life. From a distant ruler of the sky he becomes a familiar old man who speaks with people and teaches justice and mercy.
Dievas and the creation of the world
In etiological legends Dievas creates the world, often with the devil also acting: Dievas creates what is positive, while the devil creates what is negative, imitates him, and interferes. In some legends Perkūnas is also named as a creator, shaping relief and animal life.
In stories about the origin of humans, Dievas often seems indifferent: a human appears from God's spit or from a drop of water splashed while he washes. This is usually assigned to an older worldview in which the supreme god creates the world almost accidentally.
Dievas today
The image of Dievas helps explain the problem of the supreme god in Lithuanian mythology: the path from the sky god Andajas, through the folklore Dievas senelis, to the Christian God. It is one of the most important examples of continuity in the old religion.
Dievas is best read together with Andajas, Perkūnas, and Velnias: the supreme sky god, the active thunder god, and the chthonic opponent together form a central axis of the Lithuanian worldview.
